Everyzing is a multimedia website which offers automated transcriptions of audio and video content on the web. According to the Everyzing site;

EveryZing is the most powerful digital media merchandising platform available today. Media companies of all sizes leverage our unique ability to drive the volume of online content consumption and create new and powerful revenue streams. Through our speech to text, search and optimization technologies, and consumer-facing website, we create greater opportunities for consumer and advertiser access to online content. The company’s best-in-class technology and comprehensive set of advertising services enable our partners to profit from their content by launching digital channels that deliver the entertainment, news and information that consumers crave.

Its been a known issue since multimedia content, podcasts, videocasts and live streaming started disseminating through the new web that traditional search algorithms could not index audio visual content in the same way as regular web pages, pdf’s, word docs and even flash content. Transcription of new media content for the web is increasingly popular among search marketers as its a quick way to generate large volumes of quality content often on niche topics- a necessity for sites looking to boost their long tail search traffic.

The problem with transcription is it can become extremely expensive when looking to index large back catalog’s of digital media. The alternative is automated transcription using speech recognition software. The issue with the second method- which is implemented by everyzing.com is clearly more cost efficient- but often at the price of accuracy. Recognition inherently gives less accurate transcription- but from a search engine optimisation perspective does this really matter?

SEO is based on the inclusion of keywords within textual copy. While speech in podcasts and video is unlikley to have been produced with an emphasis on SEO in the same way as web copywriting- the sheer volume of copy produced when transcribed will often naturally be littered with useful keywords.

The justification for transcription is accessibility- making av content readable for web users with hearing impairments, however as with many accessibility practices- accessible content goes hand in hand with search engine friendliness and Google is likely to offer good rewards for webmasters who make their av content accessible using transcription and right now everyzing seems to be paving the way with this practice.
