Short and sweet- no more long blog posts

There’s always a temptation for search marketers when writing blog posts to say with a thousand words what could be said with 50 (or an image for that matter). Its a basic rule of SEO that the more content you have the more chance of picking up those long tail search queries which are all so important for long term traffic strategies.

However its also a rule of writing for the web that people will read 25% slower online (on a screen) so the maximum amount of text you should put on screen for a normal webpage (or blog post) is probably about 300-500 words.

Not only that but people are getting busier on the web. Blogsphere is expanding and there’s more to read than ever. Also the search engines are getting smarter and expansive content pages are not the SEO tool they once were. Concise, themed content should rank just as well.

Lets face it, unless you happen to be a prolific blogger with a loyal readership or writing for people who have nothing better to do than listen to your ramblings its better for everyone to make your point and get out.

Better to do more posts than long posts. Anything more than 500 words is probably an article and should be treated as one.

On this note I noticed an RSS tool called RSS brief which auto summarises blogs you’ve subscribed to- I’m yet to use it but seems like a plan. Short and sweet…
