Can paid Google ads bring the Googlebot to your new website faster?

Its a problem that all webmasters have faced. You finish your brand new shiny website- hours of brainstorming, copywriting, designing, coding, bugfixing finally complete and you go live and nothing happens. The period between the launch of a new domain and its first indexing on the search engines can be a frustrating time- particularly if you’re marketing focused and keen to see the impact of all the SEO features of your new site.

The time before your first Google indexing can be anything up to a couple of months (in fact a small site I built over 4 months ago but did no marketing whatsoever for is still yet to be indexed by Google- maybe this link will help! Personal Style). There are a number of methods marketers can use to bring the Googlebot faster.

Submission

With the size of the index these days and number of links to consider I doubt this method alone will get your site seen in less than 6 months but you should probably still submit a new domain here.

Directory Submission

Adding your site to DMOZ the open web directory project might get you a listing faster as a review for this site should only take a couple of weeks and Google will index it near enough eveyday. Alternatively if you’ve got cash to burn try a paid directory like Best of the web for a quicker entry.

Technorati

If its a blog you’ve launched you’re in luck as its easy to start getting listed on sites link technorati by submitting your RSS feed- most blog software will do this for you by default anyway.

The old fashioned way

If you’ve got other sites which are in the index or you hired a designer or agency to make your site chances are they’ll have a page which they can fit a link to you on. My company produce client pages for new websites which we’ve built as a quick point of entry for new launches- even if its hidden away on a deep page if the index is fast enough your link will be followed and the site will be found.

Google advertising

There’s stacks of other ways of getting a quicker entry along these lines but I’m going to discuss a theory which I haven’t heard much discussion on- signing up to Google advertising programs. Think about it- for Google to analyse your page to see what adsense ads to display or to check your AdWords ads are pointing to a valid domain it has to be visited by the Googlebot. Ok so this isn’t officially the same system which spiders websites on the crawl to index new sites but it can’t realistically be too different. These programs essentially tell Google that your website is there and bring the Googlebot to as many pages as you tell it about.

While this can’t be proved of course I have noticed new blogspots which I’ve set up always seem to have a shorter lead time to indexing when they’re displaying Adsense. Likewise an old portfolio site which never got indexed in over a year recnetly jumped into Google when i took it down and replaced it with a holding page with adsense. Coincidence? Maybe but a sound theory I believeand for anyone struggling to get there new site a precious Google listing it may be worth considering a few ads.
