Any SEO benefits of running online polls?
I have recently added the wordpress WP-Polls plugin to the vanilla blog as a way of increasing feedback with the readers who have started to return to the site on a regular basis.
I’m very happy with the plugin and would recommend it to anyone looking to run similar polls on their wordpress sites. (I first attempted to install the Democracy plugin which I believe to be similar but I uploaded and activated v2.0.1 of the plugin and it crashed my whole site! No pages would display until I deleted the democracy folder- I have no idea what was going on with it but worth mentioning)
Polls have been used on sites since the early days of web programming and were one of the flagships of ‘interactivity’ on the web. In reality they are probably a little over-rated but I believe they do have a few marketing/ SEO benefits if used wisely, a few ideas:
- Change your poll question regularly i.e. once a week to keep homepage content fresh
- Create an archive of closed poll results to create new content pages
- Use keywords- loads of people ask search engines questions phrased as questions so there’s a good chance if you word your question right you’ll get a few direct hits
- Keep it on topic- if your readers don’t care or don’t know the answer they’re not going to get involved
- Link it to a post, topic or article- don’t be lazy- stimulate the discussion yourself with a well written original post and get people to leave feedback at the end. It’ll tell you if you’re right or not and people are more likely to click a checkbox than fill out the comments box.
- be controversial- if only slightly, make the poll on something that people actually have an opion on- or else make sure you give a box for ‘I don’t care’!
As I strongly believe in practicing what I preech please take a second to fill in my poll! Do polls have any benefit for search marketing?
